Maggie Smith
MS, LMFT
I graduated from Northwestern University with a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. As a therapist, working with relationships is my strength and my passion. My training is in Integrative Systemic Therapy- an approach grounded in identifying and breaking up the patterns that keep us stuck. Oftentimes, we know we are repeating past actions that continue to yield the same undesired results, and despite our longing to do things different, we do not know how or what to change. My aim–when working with individuals, couples, and parents– is to set aside the shame of not knowing, and to rediscover the joy of learning to do better.
My speciality is helping people develop the communication skills that facilitate self-advocacy, connection, problem solving, and healthier conflict. Yet, in my personal and professional life, I have learned that communicating effectively is about more than the words that we use or when we use them. The body–how we sit, stand, breathe, stare, move– is important to attend to when we are learning to do things differently. One goal of mine is for my clients to graduate therapy as adept communicators, using their body, mind, and language, to enable meaningful conversation, and lasting change.
However, not everyone wants or needs to attend relational counseling– many individuals are simply seeking a space to explore, expand, or remake themselves, especially on the heels of a big transition. If you’re at a crossroads, wondering which path to forge or follow, I can meet you there.
I look forward to knowing you, and helping you.
